Exit interviews can be an invaluable source of information. Often
terminating employees can provide feedback about working conditions,
areas of concern, and the management skills of supervisors. One
negative report about a particular supervisor may be sour grapes;
however, two or more negative reports could indicate a more serious
situation. Active employees may avoid speaking out due to fear of
retaliation. It is always better to know about a problem and address it
than to continue losing valuable employees over the same problem.
Also, an exit interview can save you from costly litigation in the
future. If a terminating employee indicates in the exit interview that
everything was satisfactory at work, it is very difficult for that
employee to come back 6 months later and claim some form of
discrimination, harassment, etc…
